Used drives make sense for secondary storage where a failure costs you time rather than data: a game library that can be re-downloaded, a scratch disk for video work, or a second drive in a machine that already backs up somewhere else. In those roles the 42% saving per terabyte is close to free money.
They make much less sense as a boot drive, as the only copy of anything you care about, or in a NAS where a rebuild depends on the drive holding up. The failure mode of a worn SSD is often abrupt: controllers can drop to read-only or disappear from the system entirely, with little of the gradual warning a failing hard drive gives.
“Used” on Amazon covers everything from an open-box return that was never installed to a drive pulled from a machine after three years of daily writes. The listing condition notes are worth reading closely — “Used — Like New” and “Used — Acceptable” can describe very different amounts of remaining life.
Manufacturer warranties on SSDs are usually tied to the original purchase date and often are not transferable, so assume you have the retailer's return window and nothing more. That window is exactly when you should be checking the drive.
Install CrystalDiskInfo on Windows, or run smartctl -a /dev/nvme0 on Linux, and look at three values: total bytes written, power-on hours, and the percentage-used or remaining-life indicator.
Rough guide: a consumer TLC drive is rated for roughly 600 TBW per terabyte of capacity, so a 2TB drive showing 50TB written has used a few percent of its rated endurance and is effectively fresh. One showing 800TB written on a 2TB drive is well into its second half. If the numbers look bad, return it inside the window rather than hoping.
Also confirm the drive reports the right model and capacity, and that its percentage-used counter is not already near 100. Counterfeit and re-labelled drives are rarer than on marketplaces like eBay, but the check costs two minutes.
The honest comparison is not used-versus-new in the abstract, it is this used drive against the cheapest new drive at the same capacity. At the moment that is $34.99/TB used against $59.99/TB new. When the gap narrows below roughly 25%, a new drive with a full warranty is usually the better decision; when it is wide, used wins for non-critical storage.
It is also worth checking what the used drive actually is. Several of the used listings we track are former flagship drives — TLC NAND, DRAM cache, strong sustained writes — which can be a materially better drive than a new budget QLC model at the same price.
